Modern Foreign Languages
Intent
We recognise the importance of Modern Foreign Languages and we acknowledge the influence that Europe has on our lives and, as the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. Learning a language enriches the curriculum, providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic, creative learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained make a major contribution to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture and those of others. It is our intention that by the end of their time with us at Culmstock all pupils have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French.
French Drivers
- For our pupils to recognise the importance of modern foreign languages.
- For our pupils to recognise the similarities and differences between the UK and France.
- For our pupils to develop an excitement and enjoyment in learning a language.
- For our pupils to acquire an understanding of both spoken and written French.
- For our pupils to have an understanding of French culture.
Implementation
Our curriculum design is not only to develop children’s language skills, but also their love of learning a language. We teach French progressively across Key Stage 2. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through: games, role play, action songs and reading.
All teaching of MFL is in line with the National Curriculum Languages programme of study.
Impact
Our children will develop a love of languages and a love for learning about new cultures.
